A storage and transport system for supplying items to and removing them from workstations (3) comprises at least one paternoster storage cabinet (1), at least one workstation (3), first and second conveying devices (4, 5) for conveying working material between the storage rack unit (1) and the workstation (3). The storage levels (2) of the paternoster storage cabinet (1) circulate continuously. Positioned in front of the paternoster storage cabinet (1) is an apparatus (6) which removes the working material from the paternoster storage cabinet (1) and places it on the first conveying device (4). The removal device (6) has a longitudinal carriage which can be moved back and forth on a longitudinal sliding track in front of the storage rack unit (1), a slide which is freely displaceable over a defined distance with respect to the longitudinal carriage, two grippers which are mounted on the longitudinal carriage such that they can pivot about a vertical axis, an articulated lever between the gripper and the slide and a fixedly mounted longitudinal drive which engages on the slide and, via the latter, both moves the longitudinal carriage and opens and closes the grippers.
