An escalator or a moving sidewalk has successive stepping elements (1) held by guiding rails (14) with their stepping surfaces (2) on a horizontal plane and driven by an articulated chain (6) held in a guide (5) and linked by connecting elements with each step. In order to simplify the construction of such an escalator by reducing the number of guides, the links (4) of the chain (6) are mutually linked in an articulated way in order to resist traction and pressure, and are led in the chain guide (5) without any clearance on any of their sides. The connecting elements have each a horizontal axis of rotation (3) that extends transversely to the length of the chain and are held in position by the chain (6). The corresponding stepping elements (1) are rotatably mounted on the connecting elements and linked to an additional guiding rail (14) which guides a guiding piece (13) of each stepping element spaced with respect to the horizontal axis of rotation (3). |
