PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal display device with improved display contrast by providing two substrates which have striped electrodes and a polarizer which is almost at 45 deg. to the orientation processing direction of nematic liquid crystal, and providing one substrate with a grating-shaped light-shielding film in its effective display surface. CONSTITUTION:The substrates have the striped electrodes 11, 21... and orientation films 12 and 22 after liquid crystal orientation processing on their internal surfaces and are stuck together with a sealant 3 to form a container which contains liquid crystal 4. Further, the grating-shaped light-shielding film 23 is provided among the striped electrodes 21, 21... of the substrate 2. Liquid crystal molecules of the nematic liquid crystal 4 sandwiched between the substrates 1 and 2 have a spiral structure with a 200-270 deg. twist angle, and the polarizers 5 and 5 are arranged so as to have their axes of polarization crossing each other at a 60-90 deg. angle and to cross the orientation processing direction of the orienting film (12 or 22) closest to the axis of polarization of the polarizer 5 at an about 45 deg.. Consequently, the display contrast is increased and the visibility, specially in positive display is improved greatly. |
