A method for preparing an active metallocene-alumoxane catalyst in situ during polymerization. A metallocene-aluminum alkyl catalyst complex is activated during olefin polymerization by feeding wet monomer to a reaction vessel. Water entrained in the monomer at 100-10,000 ppm reacts with the aluminum alkyl in the catalyst complex to form an alumoxane, activating the resulting metallocene-alumoxane catalyst complex and initiating polymerization of the olefin monomer. The method is applied to batch and continuous olefin polymerization in gas or solution phase. The catalyst complex may be homogeneous or supported.
|
