<p>A system for encoding a progressive scan widescreen EDTV signal (NTSCF) for use by both a standard interlaced NTSC receiver and a widescreen EDTV receiver develops an auxiliary signal (YTN) containing information to assist in the conversion of television image information from one image scanning format (e.g., interlaced) to another (e.g., progressive scan).
