PURPOSE: To obtain a composition for backing carpets, having a high peeling strength, a high thread pulling-out strength and good blister resistance by adding a filler and a water-soluble cellulose ether having a specific gelling temperature to a copolymer latex comprising specific monomers. CONSTITUTION: This composition for backing carpets, having excellent drying efficiency, and giving carpets having high peeling strengths, high thread pulling- out strengths and improved blister resistances comprises (A) 100 pts.wt. (solid content) of a copolymer latex having an average particle diameter of 700-3,000Åand obtained by the emulsion polymerization of A1 : 25-65 wt.% of one or more monomers selected from aliphatic conjugated dienic monomers, acrylate esters having 2-10C alkyl groups and/or methacrylate esters having 6-14C alkyl groups, A2 : 0. 5-8 wt.% of an ethylenic unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, and A3 : 27-74.5 wt.% of a monomer copolymerizable with the monomers, (B) 0.2-4 pts.wt. of a water-soluble cellulose ether having a gelling temperature of 40-80 deg.C, and a filler.
