In a method for producing recesses, serving to receive lubricants, on workpiece surfaces, which are subjected to mechanical friction wear, of machine components which consist of a cast or surface-remelted iron alloy, for example precision castings, steel castings, alloyed cast iron, which contains segregation-forming alloy constituents, in particular chromium and/or molybdenum and/or manganese and/or silicon and/or vanadium, the workpiece surface is first worked mechanically and hardened. The workpiece surface is then heat-treated in the manner known per se and subsequently the punctiform scale formed during the heat treatment is removed. The recesses formed underneath the scale, which is punctiform in each case, serve advantageously as lubricant reservoirs on the workpiece surface which is at risk from wear, that is to say they act as "lubrication pockets". In this way, wear of the surface can be considerably reduced.
