Process for the preparation of 5-methylbutyrolactone

5-Methylbutyrolactone is prepared from pentenoic acid esters by reacting these either directly with water and acidic catalysts or first hydrolysing the ester using acidic ion exchangers as catalysts and cyclising the pentenoic acids in a second step.
