[Class 52 (ii).] A chair is provided with a back rest adjustable horizontally and vertically by connecting it to the seat 3 through a quadrangular frame consisting of four members 2, 5, 6, 8 pivoted together, the rest being attached to one of the members 2, a stay 9 being connected to the seat 3 and the frame. The frame has a diagonal member 7 adjustable in length, the stay 9 or one of the frame members being also adjustable in length. As shown, the members 5, 6 are U-shaped and pivotally secured on pins a, b to the lower end of member 2 which is of channel section. The member 5 is also pivotally secured on a pin c to a channel member 4 secured to the underside of the chair. Two arms 8 are secured at one end to the pin c and at the other end to a pin d which is retained in position by a pair of arms 9 the other ends of which are secured to the member 4. The lower ends of the member 6 are slotted and pass over the pin d. A pair of diagonal members 7 the upper ends of which are pivotally attached to the pin a on frame 2 have slots 7a at their lower ends passing over pin d. A wing nut 11 enables the members to be locked as a rigid frame in any adjusted position. In modifications, the member 8 and stay 9 may be formed as a single bracket, the slots 6a may be replaced by slots formed in the stay 9, or slots may be formed both in member 6 and stay 9. The seat and its supporting parts may be constructed as described in Specification 326,835, [Class 52 (ii), Furniture for sitting &c. upon].
