The invention relates to a method with which preferably low-solids substrates, e.g. dissolved substances, supernatants of wastewater (effluents) etc. can be treated anaerobically in bioreactors containing a packed base. According to the invention, the substrate is continuously enriched with the biogas which forms, then passed in an upwards flow from a vertical packing-subjected zone of low fluid density into a vertical packing-free zone of high density where it is subjected to a downwards flow. The density difference between the two zones which are joined together in a mutually communicating manner, which density difference effects the circulation process, is approximately 2%.
