The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of detergents of water-soluble (fatty acid monoglyceride)monosulphate type. The process consists in reacting a sulphating agent, such as chlorosulphuric acid, with glycerol dissolved in an organic solvent such as chloroform, in reacting the glycerotrisulphuric acid obtained with a higher fatty acid, such as a fatty acid of hydrogenated coconut oil, of hydrogenated cabbage palm oil, of hydrogenated palm oil or of hydrogenated tallow, or a methyl ester of such an acid, in such an organic solvent, in subjecting the reaction mixture to an extraction with a solvent, such as an aqueous lower alcohol, which dissolves the monoglyceride disulphuric acid, and in neutralising and hydrolysing this monoglyceride disulphuric acid with a neutralising agent such as sodium bicarbonate, in aqueous media, to produce the water-soluble detergent salt in a high yield and with a high active ingredient content, while only using stoichiometric proportions of the reactants. Application to the manufacture of detergents.
