The invention relates to a method and a system for locating the active end of a marine geophysical prospecting streamer. Each tail float FL1, FL2 is fitted with an identified acoustic responder R1, R2 making it possible to emit when triggered an omni-directional acoustic wave. Each active end of the streamers F1, F2 is fitted with a receiver H1, H2 which receives the omni-directional acoustic wave. An encoded signal SD1, SD2 is emitted by the boat B and allows triggering of an identified acoustic responder R1 or R2, and the propagation times t11, t12,t21, t22 of the omnidirectional acoustic wave between the emission source constituted by the acoustic responder R1, R2 and the end receivers H1, H2, are measured and determined. The true position of the end receivers H1, H2 and the corresponding active ends of the streamers F1, F2 is calculated by triangulation with respect to the positions of the corresponding tail floats FL1, FL2. Application to marine geophysical prospecting in mono- or multi-streamer installations. <IMAGE>
