PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the title base material having a low transmission loss in a short time by inserting a core rod made of pure SiO2 glass into the hollow part of a clad pipe with a pure SiO2 glass layer on its inner wall, heating, and integrating the glass and rod. CONSTITUTION:SiCl4, O2, and Cl2 are passed through the inside of the clad pipe 1 consisting of F-SiO2 glass, the pipe is heated by an oxyhydrogen burner 4 from the outside, hence the fine SiO2 particles 2 formed by the vapor-phase reaction in the pipe are thinly deposited on the inner wall of the pipe, and the layer 3 of a pure-SiO2 transparent glass body is formed in 5-500mum thickness. The pure-SiO2 core glass rod 5 is inserted into the hollow part of the pipe 1 having the layer 3, the pipe is heated by the burner 4 from the outside while passing Cl2 through the pipe, the rod 5 and the pipe 1 are collapsed and integrated, and the base material for a glass fiber having a zero-distribution shift at a 1.5mum band, consisting of an SiO2 core and an F-SiO2 clad, and having a prescribed refractive index structure is obtained. |
