NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R<1> is H, 1-22C alkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl; pH is phenyl). EXAMPLE:(R)-(-)-6-methyl-2-hydroxy-5-heptylphenyl sulfide. USE:A synthetic intermediate for pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, other physiologically active substances, ferroelectric liquid crystal material, etc. Since the compound has especially high optical purity, it is excellent as a production raw material for high-purity optically active substance. PREPARATION:The objective compound of formula I can be produced by reacting an optically active epichlorohydrin of formula II with a hydrogen nucleophilic compound or a carbon nucleophilic compound (e.g. metal hydride) and reacting the obtained compound of formula III with thiophenol. The amount of the hydrogen nucleophilic compound or the carbon nucleophilic compound is 1.5-10 equivalent and that of thiophenol is 1-2 equivalent based on the compound of formula II.
