PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound by one-stage reaction readily, in high yield and industrially, by reacting a readily obtainable inexpensive hydroquinone with an aromatic hydrocarbon as raw materials in the presence of an iron ion-containing solid acid catalyst and O2. CONSTITUTION:A hydroquinone such as hydroquinone shown by formula I (R is halogen or 1-6C alkyl; n is 0-3) or a benzoquinone such as p- benzoquinone shown by formula II is reacted with an aromatic hydrocarbon such as mesitylene which is replaced with 1-10C alkyl and contains at least one H bonded to the aromatic ring or <=10C condensed polycyclic hydrocarbon such as tetralin (useful as solvent) in the presence of both a solid acid catalyst having an iron ion-containing layer structure such as activated clay treated with a Fe(II) compound and O2 (not required when the compound shown by formula II is used) at 50-200 deg.C under normal pressure of under pressure to give the aimed compound such as 1,3,5-trimethylphenylhydroquinone. |
