PURPOSE: To fully automatically and continuously detect cracked eggshells at a high speed by causing a series of impacted elastic deformation in at least parts of the eggshells. CONSTITUTION: An egg 1 is placed on rollers 2 and 3 so that the egg 1 can rotate around its axis of symmetry 5 and, above the egg 1, three probes 6 composed of glass tubes are fixed to a holder 7 and connected to a base 9 having a compressed air distributing chamber 10. When the egg 1 is rotated, bellows 13 connected to the holder 7 are deformed by compressed air from a compressed air source 15 and the probes 6 are pressed down to strike blows against the surface of the egg 1. From the relation between the pressing down force and the elasticity of the eggshell of the egg 1 when the surface is impacted, the probes 6 repeat bouncing motions against the eggshell. The number of repeating times and magnitude of the bouncing motions vary depending upon the elasticity of the eggshell and, when the eggshell is indefectible, the probes 6 repeat the bouncing motions many times and, when the eggshell is cracked, a few times only. The bouncing motions of the probes 6 are converted into electric signals and inputted to a computer 23 and the computer 23 finds a cracked eggshell by comparing the number of repeating times and magnitudes of the bouncing motion with reference values. |
