The invention relates to a process for discontinuously burning off soot which has been deposited on a heat-resistant exhaust gas filter of an internal combustion engine, in particular a diesel engine. In this process, at least one metal is to be present. The object, both of having the combustion of the soot proceed at temperatures as low as possible and also of achieving a long service life of the filter, is achieved in a particularly advantageous manner by using an organic complexing agent which is able to form a complex with the metal and/or by using organometallic complexing of the metal with the organic complexing agent. The invention also contains an apparatus for carrying out the process according to the invention. The exhaust gas filter, for this purpose, preferably has at least two filter units which can be operated separately at least at times.
