Suction transport apparatus for gripping and carrying workpieces, having at least one suction plate which has, on its suction surface which is bounded by a ring seal made of elastic material, a supporting plate which is provided with a vacuum passage and is arranged so as to be sunk with respect to the peripheral seal and an air permeable cover which covers the supporting plate, the supporting plate (10) being of solid construction and having a central suction opening (26) as the vacuum passage, the cover comprising an essentially rigid screen plate (21), the screen openings (24) of which communicate with one another inside the volume bounded by their ends, and the bearing surface (14) of the screen plate (21), which faces away from the supporting plate (10), being arranged so as to be offset with respect to that sealing surface (22), which faces the workpiece (38) to be gripped, of the ring seal formed by a bulbous ring (18). <IMAGE>
