PURPOSE:To prevent a deterioration in cell performance during storage by connecting a resistor to a cell and storing the cell with it discharged at a specified range of infinitesimal current. CONSTITUTION:An acidic methanol fuel cell is discharged at 0.05-2mA/cm<2>, preferably 0.1-1mA/cm<2>, during storage. For example, a 200OMEGA resistor is connected to a cell having an electrode area of 10 cm<2> to discharge at a current of 0.5mA/cm<2>, and the cell is stored with it discharged for 4000 hours. After that, the cell is continuously discharged at 50mA at 20 deg.C and the discharge curve a is obtained. When the cell is discharged immediately after fuel was supplied, discharge curve x is obtained. The discharge curve a is similar to the curve x though discharge voltage is slightly low. Deteriorations of closed circuit voltage and discharge capacity are only a little after storage. |
