The invention relates to a head mask (10) for welders which comprises a shell (11) that essentially covers the face and forehead and has a window opening (26) closable by a welding glass (8) which can be moved via a mechanical moving system (7). The welding glass (8) can be displaced from a closed position to such an extent that an observation slit (5) is exposed. In order to ensure that the welding glass (8) is closed before the start of welding it is proposed, according to the invention, that the mechanical moving system (7) be controlled as a function of the current flowing through the welding electrode (17'). The welding current is released by a switch (3) actuated by the welding glass (8) in the closed position. <IMAGE>
