Two support film webs which are to be coated are brought together from two supply rolls and in the process a material interlayer is injected before joining together. The support film webs which are joined together to form a double web are adhesively bonded along the film longitudinal edges or welded by the effect of heat and passed, as double web, through a coating solution which is disposed in the lower part of a coating and drying device. After the passage through the coating solution bath, the double web is diverted perpendicularly upwards and passes through metering and smoothing rolls. This is followed by a drying zone consisting of plate heaters. After emergence from the coating and drying device, the double web, which is coated on both sides, is cut open along the film longitudinal edges, so that a separation of the two carrier film webs, each of which is coated on one side, can be carried out. <IMAGE>
