In a method of producing a sew-knitted, net-like sheet structure weft and warp elements 4, 5, such as especially sheet strips, which initially do not possess the structure of textile filaments, are converted into filaments, which conversion can be carried out on the machine which produces the sheet structure. For this purpose, the weft and warp elements are sheathed by chain stitching, the sheathing of the weft elements in an advantageous case taking place in time before the connection with the warp elements and the warp elements being sheathed either before the connection or simultaneously therewith by the filaments which form the connection. As shown, strips, rovings or the like 4'', 4', 4'', 5, 5' are narrowed by means 6, 15, 21 prior to sheathing.
