One end of a long or continuous film (38) is retained by a leader (46). The leader (46) is engaged with engagement projections (130) formed on the outer periphery of an endless timing belt (124) stretched between sprocket wheels (116, 118) in order to guide the leader (46) such that the film (38) is conveyed through a treating solution contained in a treating tank (20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32). Guide means (146) are disposed in the treating tank such as to oppose the outer periphery of the timing belt (124), thereby maintaining the engagement between the leader (46) and the timing belt (124).
