The water is treated in an expanded or fluidised bed digester in absence of oxygen, but in presence of mineral clay e.g. sepiolite, smectite, vermiculite, kaolinite, chlorite, haloisite, ilite or palygorskite, at 10-60 deg.C and pH 4-9. A combustible gas of high calorific value is obtained, providing a positive energy balance in contrast to aerobic processes.
