Gels having a pH gradient immobilised by polymerisation are in the form of a cylinder, pref. integral with the tube or capillary in which they are prepd. The appts. for prepn. of the gels contains two vessels: one contg. a soln. of a mixt. of polymerisable acrylamdie derivs. (e.g. the 'Immobilines' (RTM), in which at least one weakly acidic buffer gp. is bonded to the amino gp., and the other contains a soln. of similar derivs. but having at least one weakly basic buffer gp. bonded to amino. USE/ADVANTAGE - These gels are useful for one-dimensional electrophoresis, partic. as the first step of a two-dimensional electrophoretic sepn., but also as an analytical operation in itself. Cylindrical gels of any cross-sectional areas can be prepd. by using precision pumps at a pressure sufficient to overcome forces of capillarity.
