PURPOSE:To prepare in a high yield a copolymer contg. D-(-)-3-hydroxy- butyrate and -valerate units at a desired molar ratio and capable of easily and stably giving moldings such as tough fibers, films, etc., by proliferating a microorganism capable of producing a poly-3-hydroxybutyrate and thereafter incubating the microorganism in the presence of two specific compds. CONSTITUTION:A microorganism capable of producing a poly-3-hydroxy- butyrate, such as Alcaligenes faecalis ATCC 8750 or Alcaligenes eutrophus NCIB 11599 is aerobically incubated in a suitable medium adjusted to a pH of 6-10 at 20-40 deg.C to proliferate the microorganism, which is then further incubated in a medium or a liquid medium substantially free of nitrogen and phosphorus or contg. a small amt. of nitrogen and/or phosphorus in the presence of valeric acid or a deriv. or salt thereof and n-butyric acid or a deriv. or salt thereof at a desired ratio in the same manner as that mentioned above. The resulting incubation mixture is subjected to solid-liquid separation, followed by washing and drying to prepare in a high yield a copolymer contg. D-(-)-3- hydroxybutyrate units and D-(-)-3-hydroxyvalerate units at a desired molar ratio. |
