METHOD OF SEPARATING METAL FROM CATALYST MATERIAL

PURPOSE: To efficiently recover metals from used catalysts by bringing the catalysts into contact with oxygen-contg. gas at a specific temp., then bringing the same into contact with hydrogen at a specific temp. to reduce the contained metal and washing the residue with an acid or water. CONSTITUTION: The spent carbon-supported catalyst materials are brought into contact with the oxygen-contg. gas at a temp. sufficient to accelerate the combustion of the carbon and at a temp. insufficient for the volatilization of the metal and a metal compd. and are heated. The heated catalyst materials are brought into contact with hydrogen at a temp. sufficient to accelerate reduction of all oxided metals not contg. in the catalyst and at a temp. not to volatize the metal and metal compd. The formed residue is then washed with the acid or water and the metal is separated and recovered. The metal is adequately an oxidizable platinum metal.
