2-Amino-4-hydroxy thiazolin derivs. (syn isomer) of formula (I) and their salts are new. In (I), R1 is lower alkyl (substd. with (protected) carboxyl); Z is -SR4 R4 is (substd.) alkyl, aralkyl or aryl or halogen. (I) or their salts are useful as intermediates for the prodn. of Cephalosporin derivs. having excellent antibacterial power. For example, Cephalosporin (syn isomer) of formula (II) where R2 is H or carboxy-protective gp.; R3 is (substd.) heterocyclic gp. bond with 3-exomethylene is C-N bond; is derived from cpds. (I) or their salts.
