PURPOSE: To select an adequate item from a data base according to a previously selected item by providing a means for sequentially selecting plural items from the data base as a function of data included n the data base. CONSTITUTION: The system which automatically selects a component number and guarantees the adaptability of plural devices is provided with the data base that can be maintained by a user so as to store the component number and its description. Further, the system is provided with a mechanism for selecting an item from the data base according to the description and data in the data base. Furthermore, the system is provided with a mechanism which selects another item as a function of the item and a function of data relating the individual descriptions of both the data to each other. Consequently, the data base can have items and descriptions extended when accessed by the user, and on the basis of the description and data included in the data base, the item can be selected from the data base.
