The refrigeration cycle in an air conditioner includes a compressor (1) of variable exhaust amount type, a 4-way valve (2) connected to the discharge side and suction side of the compressor, indoor and outdoor heat exchangers (5,3) connected to the valve, and an expansion valve (4) of a motor-driven tape. The regulating circuit controls the flow rate of refrigerant into the indoor or outdoor heat exchanger by adjusting the opening degree of the expansion valve in response to the amount of the refrigerant exhausted from the compressor, thus setting the temp. of the refrigerant to be discharged from the compressor to a predetermined temp. responding to the exhaust amount of the compressor.
