An air conditioner has a refrigeration cycle including a compressor (1), a 4-way valve (2), an outdoor heat exchanger (3), an indoor heat exchanger (5) and an expansion valve (4). A switching control valve (12) is connected to the suction side of the compressor. A first branch passage (14) is connected at its one end between the 4-way valve and indoor heat exchanger, and at the other end to the control valve. A second branch passage (15) is connected at its one end between the outdoor heat exchanger and the expansion valve, and at the other end to the control valve. During defrosting, the second branch passage forms a short circuit which passes the compressor, 4- way valve, outdoor heat exchanger and control valve.
