PURPOSE:To increase a permissible quantity for an axial shift and to improve optical coupling efficiency, by forming not a flat end surface, but a nearly sectorial end surface having larger arc length than the width of an optical waveguide as the coupling-side end surface of an optical wavegide. CONSTITUTION:The end surface shape of the optical waveguide 4 is an end surface 20 which is larger than the top side length of the core 14a of an optical fiber 14 and sectorial shape in plane view. Namely, light which is projected fro the optical fiber 14 and enters the end surface of the optical waveguide 4 is refracted and converged in the axial direction of the optical waveguide and light projected from the optical fiber 14 as well as a case wherein a convergence lens is installed between the optical fiber 14 and optical waveguide 4. Consequently, even if the optical fiber 14 and optical wave guide 4 have an optical-axis shift, they re coupled with each other with the high degree of optical coupling. Further, there is no irregularity in the degree of optical coupling and the optical coupling efficiency is high even when this structure is applied to an optical array device. |
