The reactor (20) has a vessel (22) with a closure head (24), and a reactive core (34) is disposed in the vessel. The core comprises plural nuclear fuel assemblies (32) which are capable of accomodating water displacing elements (40), and neutron absorbing control rods. Some of the fuel assemblies are associated with the water displacing elements and some others are associated with the neutron absorbing control rods. The reactivity of the core is controlled by the associations.
