PURPOSE:To enable oxygen gas generated in the positive electrode to be effectively absorbed by forming an oxygen-gas absorbing electrode, which is installed inside a lead storage battery, by the use of both a spongy lead layer provided at the bottom of an acid-proof case and a thin film which is made of Teflon or the like and installed on the inner surface of said lead layer. CONSTITUTION:The bottom of a bottomed cylindrical case 1 made of a polypropylene resin or the like, is provided with a lead layer 3 which is formed by packing into a lead alloy grid a lead paste which is the same as a negative active material. Next, a thin film 2 which is permeated by oxygen gas but not by sulfuric acid, is installed on the inner surface of the lead layer 3 thereby making an oxygen-gas absorbing electrode. After that, the thus made electrode is immersed in a lead storage battery in such a manner that the lead layer 3 is always located below the liquid level of electrolyte and that the top part of the case 1 is located above the liquid level so as to connect the lead layer 3 and a negative electrode 5 electrically. As a result, the inner side of the case 1 is in contact with the gaseous phase part enabling oxygen contained in the gaseous phase part to be efficiently absorbed and even a lead storage battery with a large capacity can be easily kept maintenance free. |
