Ratchet spanner having an open insert rotatably mounted in a jaw-like head of a lever, the insert having locking teeth which form, together with intermediate members arranged in the head, a ratchet mechanism. The arrangement is designed such that the power transmission upon rotation of the insert in the head remains secured in spite of intermediate members provided at the jaws, which members are constructed as spring-loaded locking pawls and follow locking teeth of preset spacing which are distributed at equal distances over the remaining outer circumference of the insert, the spring loading of the locking pawls being produced by a spring arrangement which surrounds all of the pawls and forms a partial circumference of the surface of a cylinder, provision being made for an actuating element which surrounds the locking pawls, is mounted so as to be tangentially displaceable and in one of its positions acts on the locking pawls in such a way that they are disengaged from the toothing. <IMAGE>
