The colour graininess of a silver halide recording material is improved by the combined use of a naphthol-type 4-equivalent coupler of the formula I and a naphthol-type 2-equivalent coupler. In addition, image dyes having good stability in the dark and low sensitivity to exhausted bleaching baths are obtained. <IMAGE> In the formula I: Y<1> is <IMAGE> or a 5-, 6- or 7-membered heterocyclic radical, R<1> is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl or a heterocyclic group, R<2> is H or a radical like R<1>, or R<1> and R<2>, together with the P atom and the O atoms described, complete a 5-, 6- or 7-membered ring, R<3> is a straight-chain, branched or cyclic alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl group, aralkyl, aryl or a heterocyclic group, and R<4> and R<5> which can be identical or different are H or a radical like R<3>.
