To provide a method and an apparatus for the automatic bending of straight tubes into a serpentine shape, which method and apparatus permit a continuous feed of the stock in the minimum possible space, the proposal is that the straight tube should be clamped and positioned in such a way that on opposite sides of the tube two spaced pairs 1, 2, 4, 5 of bending rollers and a single further bending roller 3 situated between these pairs of bending rollers and arranged on the longitudinal axis defined by two bending rollers of the pair which are situated on the same side of the tube come to bear against the tube, whereupon, for the (initial) bending of the tube into a U shape, that roller 2 of the first pair of rollers which lies on the abovementioned longitudinal axis is pivoted through 90@ about the axis of the opposing fixed roller 1, during which process the individual bending roller 3 is simultaneously pivoted about the same axis of rotation, likewise through 90@, and the second pair 4, 5 of bending rollers is simultaneously guided towards the first pair 1, 2 of rollers in a movement parallel to the original longitudinal axis of the tube until the U limbs brought about by the bending are parallel, whereupon the bending rollers 1-5 are moved back and the tube is transported onwards and the bending operation described is, if required, carried out on one or more adjoining tube sections. <IMAGE>
