Before entering a heat exchanger, esp. a condenser, cooling water from power plant is directed through a cylindrical filter element (24) in a housing (23) and passes from the filter interior to the exchanger, leaving foreign bodies on the filter exterior. When the difference between recorded pressures downstream and upstream of the filter reaches a threshold value, indicating e.g. 50% clogging level, a vane (22) in the inlet pipe is inclined to direct a scouring stream of water round one side of the filter. When that side has been adequately scoured, the vane inclination is changed to direct the water stream round the other side.
