PRODUCTION OF 2,2-BIS(4-HYDROXYPHENYL)-CYCLOHEXANECARBOXYLIC ACID DERIVATIVE

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a monomer for polyester or synthetic intermediate for 2-hydroxyfluorenones, by reacting a cyclohexanone-2-carboxylic acid derivative with phenols. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula III can be produced by reacting a cyclohexanone-2-carboxylic acid derivative of formula I (R is H or lower alkyl; R<1> is lower alkyl; n is 0-4) with phenols of an acid catalyst (e.g. hydrogen chloride gas) at 20-100 deg.C. The amount of the catalyst is 0.1-50 pts.wt. per 100pts.wt. of the compound of formula I. The phenols are preferably used in excess as a solvent, i.e., used in an amount of 2-10pts.wt. based on the compound of formula I.
