PURPOSE: To display and print a smooth characters having no corner projection by performing a smoothing process fast by checking data of dots slantingly about a no-date dot and writing data at the no-data dot position when predetermined conditions are met, checking data of four dots in total, i.e., two dots each in a slanting direction about the no-data dot when there is the no-data dot among dots constituting an enlarged character pattern, and judging whether or not the dot is corrected or writing data to the dot and correcting it when the dot is corrected. CONSTITUTION: When enlargement indication operation is performed on an input device 3 as to a desired character, a main controller 1 stores a code indicating enlargement additionally to the character code of a corresponding character stored in a document data memory 5, and reads the corresponding character out of a dictionary memory 4, thereby converting it into character pattern data of double height and width size of 48×48 dots.
