A steering mechanism for the rear wheels of a motor vehicle is described which, when the front wheels are steered out of the straight-head position, initially permits, using simple means, the rear wheels to steer in the same direction, changing, as the front wheels are steered further into steering of the rear wheels in the opposite directions. For this purpose, a steering arm shaft (2) is provided parallel to the rotary shaft (1) and at a distance therefrom. A control link (7) is coupled to the free end of a radial steering arm (5) of the steering shaft (2) by means of a ball-and-socket joint (6). The control link (7) is connected via a first rotary joint (8) with rigid corners to an articulated axle (10) which extends transversely with respect to the axis (9) of the rotary shaft by one end of an intermediate lever (11). This intermediate lever (11) is connected at the other end to the steering arm shaft (2) via a further rotary joint (12) which is parallel to the first rotary joint. In the straight ahead position of the front wheels, the ball-and-socket joint (6) is located between the axes (9, 13) of the rotary shaft (1) and of the steering arm shaft (2). <IMAGE>
