The apparatus has intensity of background light adjusted, so no difference exists between amounts of light received whether or not objects are in path. Objects are brought to a sorting path and acceptable ones are collected by a tube. A foreign particle outlet is provided for discharging unacceptable objects out of the apparatus. Photoelectric detectors at opposite side of the path sense acceptable and unacceptable objects. The detectors include light emitters and background lights to provide a reference. A valve actuator is responsive to the light receivers for producing an ejection signal when any unacceptable objects are present in the path. Sorting operation is not interrupted while adjusting background brightness.
