The rope brake, which automatically arrests further movement of the person or load on the rope regardless of which direction the rope passes through the device, includes a griction cylinder (12) disposed on a base plate (2), a friction body (13), and a pivotally mounted control level (19). The rope is wrapped around at least a portion of the circumference of the friction cylinder and also around the friction body. The rope then passes between a concave braking surface (15) disposed on the friction body and one end of the control lever. The end of the control lever is provided with two cam surfaces (22,23) which are positioned on opposite sides of the axis of rotation of the lever.
