A filament (11) is positioned concentrically within a pipe (10) and is connected via a flexible shielded co-axial or twin cable (12) to a charged capacitor (13). The capacitor having the level of stored energy corresponding to the required energy of the shock wave. When the switch (14) is closed the capacitor is rapidly discharged through the filament causing it to explode. In order to establish the shock wave, it is necessary to fill the appropriate region of the pipe (10) with a suitable energy transfer medium which may be water. Alternatively another nonexplosive medium in solid or gel form may be used.
