The pressure in an accumulation chamber (29) increases during the compression stroke of a plunger (31) to create a force in excess of the thrust of a return spring (50). An accumulator (23) shifts away from the blind socket end (21) of the pump body (11), and its discharge valve (28) becomes unseated to open the discharge passage (14). The discharge continues until the pressure in the pump chamber (33) is again overcome by the resilient force of the spring, closing the discharge as the accumulator returns to its original position in which its discharge valve is reseated to close the flow. At the end of the plunger suction stroke, a container vent valve (48) closes the container vent.
