PURPOSE: To obtain the subject composition giving excellent adhesive strength, resistances to water and blister, etc. by including a specific amount of a mixture of an anionic and a specific nonionic surfactant in a composition containing a specific copolymer latex and a pigment. CONSTITUTION: This paper coating composition contains a surfactant in an amount of 0.3-10 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. of a solid part of a copolymer latex in a composition containing a copolymer latex (40-95 wt.% of toluene- insoluble part and having 1,000-2,500Åaverage particle diameter) obtained by polymerizing (A) 20-60 wt.% of aliphatic conjugate diene, (B) 0.5-10 wt.% of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (C) 39.5-75 wt.% of an unsaturated nitrile, an aromatic vinyl and/or a (meth)acrylate and (D) 0-20 wt.% of other monomer copolymerizable with them with a pigment. The surfactant is composed of 1 pt.wt. of anionic surfactant and 0.3-10 pts.wt. of nonionic surfactant having 20-200 mol of addition mol number of ethylene oxide.
