PURPOSE:To obtain an optical isolator which is small in size and low in cost by forming a waveguide as a channel type waveguide of multi-mode propagation and registering adapted multi-mode optical fibers to both ends thereof to maximize the coupling efficiency, then fixing the same. CONSTITUTION:A Ti film mask patterned to meet the size of the groove for connecting fibers is formed on a single crystal substrate 1 consisting of GGG (Gd2Ga5O12) and is etched in hot phosphoric acid to form the groove 7 of the prescribed size. After a Bi-substd. YIG(Y3Fe5O12) film is formed by a liquid phase epitaxy on the GGG substrate 1, the entire part is subjected to ion beam etching. A ZnO film 3 is formed on this waveguide 2 and further an Al film 14 is formed, following which the optical fibers 6 polished at the end faces are fixed to a manipulator and are adjusted to maximize the intensity of the transmitted light. The optical fibers are fixed in this position by an optical adhesive agent. Since the optical isolator formed in such a manner is fixed with the optical fibers at both ends of the element, the connection to the other fibers is extremely easy. |
