An austenitic stainless steel having excellent corrosion resistance in hot aqueous medium is disclosed. The steel essentially consists by weight of C : not more than 0. 08% Si: 2. 5 - 4. 0% Mn: not more than 0. 8% P : not more than 0. 045% S : not more than 0. 005% Cr: 16 - 25% Ni: 6 - 20% Cu: 1. 5 - 4. 0% N : not more than 0. 05% and the balance Fe and unavoidable incidental impurities.
