PURPOSE:To detect the break or hole of a bill by alinging multiple photoelectric elements in a line in response to a tube-like light source provided at a right angle to the transport directin of the bill, scanning the permeating light in the width direction, and converting the detected output into binary digits for processing. CONSTITUTION:A tube-like light source 11 is provided at a right angle to the transport direction (a) of a bill P, the light is scanned by multiple photoelectric elements 13 alinged on the opposite side to the bill in the width direction, the output is converted into binary digits, and the dark level is processed as ''1'' and the bright level as ''0''. The threshold value classifying the level ''1'' and ''0'' is made a half of the difference between the output width no bill and the output with the bill. The scan area A0 is divided into three, named and center section A2 and both side sections A1 and A3. After predetermined (n) scans have been completed, if no dark level ''1'' occurs at both sides A1, A3, it is judged that a break B exists at the end section of the bill P, and if the bright level ''0'' occurs in the drak level ''1'' in the middle of the scanning line, it is judged that a hole H exists. Thereby, a hole or break can be exactly detected regardless of a new or old bill. |
