The compressor (12) with multiple stages (14,16,18,20,22) in a common housing, has interstage conduits (26,28,30,32) conducting compressed fluid, e.g. water, between them. Injection liquid is supplied on a header (34) to a set of control valves (36,38,40,42) to respectively feed the conduits. The injection microprocessor control (44) povides individual mechanical operation of the control valves, with pressure and temperature data being fed back from transducers in each of the conduits. The control determines the valve setting required to cool the steam being fed to each successive stage.
